Who private insurance is for

Not everyone may switch. These three groups can.

Self-employed and freelancers

You may go private regardless of income. If you are healthy and join early, you often pay less than the maximum public contribution.

Civil servants

Your employer covers a large share of your medical costs through the Beihilfe. Private insurance only covers the rest, which is why it is usually the cheapest option for civil servants.

Employees over €6,450

If your gross salary is above the compulsory insurance threshold (2026: €77,400 a year), you can choose. Your employer pays half, up to a legal maximum.
